19 Years and Finally Debt-Free

Over $100,000 for a Liberal Arts MA. I went to work for a nonprofit in 2013, and just yesterday I got the letter saying I’ve completed the 120 payments for PSLF. I can’t believe this 19-year-long nightmare is finally over. I really hope the same for everyone else still going through this. Best of luck to you all, and let’s keep pushing to fix this broken system.

Congratulations!

It would be great if we could get to the root of the issue and lower the cost of higher education.

Totally agree. In 1990, I got my teaching credential from a private university. I was only one class away from my master’s, and I was about $10k in debt. If I’d taken that last class, I’d have owed around $12k, which wasn’t too bad. I paid that off pretty easily.

In 2013, when I went back for a master’s at a private university, it cost $120k. The price jump is ridiculous. That’s not inflation, it’s a straight-up money grab.

The loan system is just adding fuel to the fire. It’s not going to get better anytime soon.

Congrats man! I really hope I can get there someday too!

The huge rise in college costs can be linked directly to government-backed loans.

Congrats! Go treat yourself to a nice dinner and a drink. You’re finally freeeeeee!

Congrats!

Congrats! 19 years is crazy, but I bet it feels amazing to have that weight off your shoulders and your wallet! Do something fun to celebrate, even if it’s just dancing around in your living room!

Congrats! My nightmare is finally over too. Glory to God!

Congrats!

So happy for you and everyone else who’s finally seeing some light at the end of this tunnel!

Can you explain why you called it a ‘corrupt degenerate system’? I know someone who’s making decisions about school and loans, and I want to share your experience with them to help them avoid the same situation. Thanks!

@Han
For me, it’s all about those interest rates.

@Han
I think they’re referring to how tuition skyrocketed after the government started backing student loans and made them easy to get. I looked at my school’s tuition in 1960 vs. now, and even after adjusting for inflation, it’s still four times higher today.

Not much we can do about it though. It is what it is.

Your post seems to reference the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program or the related TEPSLF program. If you want more specific advice or discussions on this, there’s a forum dedicated to PSLF that might be helpful. Just a heads-up!

I can’t believe you took that long for a Liberal Arts degree. What a joke.

Liberal Arts, huh? No wonder it took so long.
