Has anyone had luck cancelling IDR recertification after submission?

I know this has been a big concern for a lot of people. I recently submitted my IDR recertification, as my due date was coming up in January, and just received a letter saying my deadline is now extended by a year (to January 2026). I was really stressed because I had already submitted it, and I didn’t want my payments to increase, especially since my income is a lot higher now than when I recertified back in 2020. For context, I’m on PAYE.

I decided to call Mohela today to ask if I could cancel it. I waited on hold for about 30 minutes, spoke with someone, explained the situation, and they escalated my case. About an hour later, I got a call back from a specialist who submitted a cancellation request for me. She simply filled out a quick form with the reason being ‘IDR recertification extension’. The whole process took about two minutes. So, don’t stress too much about it! Just call them if you’ve already submitted it and they can help cancel it for you.

Was your IDR anniversary in January? Or was it the recertification deadline?

What was your original IDR anniversary date?

Thanks for sharing this! I submitted my IBR application last month and called to cancel it. The first person I spoke with told me it wasn’t possible, but your post made me try again and get a second opinion. The person I spoke with today was able to submit the cancellation request for me.

I was told that everything is being handled on a day-to-day basis. There was already an extension request filed for me, which is still active, but then I got moved to next year for renewal. Since the deadline is so far off, they said my application would likely just be ignored. It’s all pretty confusing right now, so I’m just going to pay what I’m told to.
