Navient is a loan servicer, not a lender. To determine the type of loan, you should review your loan details. You can view all your federal loans at www.studentaid.gov.
I noticed that my loan type is listed as FFELP Stafford Subsidized. Does that indicate it’s a federal or private loan?
Those are private loans with government backing. You can consolidate them into Direct Consolidation Loans, which are fully federal.
This is what I need to do to qualify for forgiveness. I have the same type of loan and also received Pell Grants.
If your loan is from 2007, it’s likely one of those “federal” loans that aren’t really considered federal anymore. Student loans issued before 2010 were distributed through banks and aren’t classified as federal today, even though they were the only option available back then. Link to the article
Technically, the Direct Loan program began in 1994, but schools had to choose to participate. FFELP loans are still considered federal loans and offer many of the same protections as other federal student loans. However, because these loans are privately owned, they were not included in the payment and interest pause.
Navient used to manage many federal student loans but stopped in late 2021. It transferred most loans to Aidvantage but still handles some older federal and private loans.
