Seeking Help! My Federal Student Loans were transferred from Great Lakes to Nelnet and my balance jumped from $68k to $76k

Hi guys,

Ever since I logged into my new Nelnet account, I’ve been in a state of anxiety. Managing my student loans is a top priority for me, especially since they started at over $200,000. Knowing exactly what I owe is crucial, so when I saw the balance, I immediately began to panic.

I reached out to both Great Lakes and Nelnet simultaneously, trying to make sense of the situation. Unfortunately, Great Lakes has completely erased all the accessible information from my account. I can’t see my payment history, statements, or much else beyond student loan interest deduction documents.

Nelnet isn’t much help either; they only show what they claim I owe. Initially, they insisted that the balance they received from Great Lakes matched what was reported on studentaid.gov, implying I was mistaken.

After persistently arguing otherwise, a Great Lakes representative found documentation showing my balance was $76,000 in January 2020, despite making payments totaling $7,000 to $8,000 that apparently weren’t credited. I find this baffling because the last time I logged into my Great Lakes account, my balance was accurately displayed (I wish I had taken a screenshot then).

I requested Great Lakes email me the document, but I still haven’t received anything. I fear they might expect me to prove their mistake, yet I can’t access the necessary paperwork since my Great Lakes account is locked due to their termination of services. This situation feels like a violation.

Adding to my frustration, when I checked mystudentaid.gov, it indicated my last payment date was 1/01/1901.

This entire ordeal has taken a toll on my well-being, and I’m exhausted. How can it be legal for my payment history to be erased, my loans transferred to another servicer, and then expect me to shoulder the burden of proving what I owe?

I’m deeply distressed and worn out by the constant impact of these issues on my life.

They wouldn’t do it on purpose. No large corporation is going to risk everything by increasing your loan balance for no reason  Administrative errors happen. Do you have proof of the $7-8k payment? It should be a matter of them tracking down how it was applied.

You should have received multiple notices from Great Lakes about the change. I’ve gotten so many emails and phone calls notifying me my loans are moving it’s annoying!
