To all of us (ME) who refinanced our government student loans: rest in peace

NOW… I’ll be raising a glass in honor of everyone who, either before or during the pandemic, refinanced their government student loans via a private company. I did what I believed to be the right thing at the time, and the cards didn’t work out. I am guilty. Although it’s always ideal to refinance early in 2020 to avoid paying as much interest, I felt that it was the wisest course of action given the many opinions over the duration of the student loan payment moratorium. Some of you, I know, are in a similar situation. I apologize to all of you, and I hope that things work out for us.

My siblings went through it too, so I completely understand what you’re going through. The toughest part is dealing with public service. They didn’t tell me about it until afterward, and I was like, NOOOOOO!!!

I’m really sorry to hear that. This system has been such a mess for so long. I nearly refinanced because it felt like there was no end in sight for me in the PSLF program, especially with Nelnet and other services constantly providing incorrect information. But then, Biden stepped in and changed things with the waiver program just before I refinanced. I wish they could extend that to your family too.

I hope there will be ongoing support as more attention is drawn to this predatory system. If we can allocate billions to corporations, we should be able to help people who are trying to improve their lives or support a family, like through child care coverage for young children, and Medicare for all.
